Robert J. Schmidt

Having grown up in Las Vegas as the oldest child in a large family, I have always had a passion for defending those who cannot defend themselves. I have taken that passion for defense and focused that energy into helping people resolve their legal issues. I find this process extremely rewarding and continually improve my practice to better serve my clients.

I attended law school at the William S. Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and graduated in 2017 with a Juris Doctorate with Highest Pro Bono Honors. As a member of the Nevada Law Journal and the Student Bar Association, I was a very active law school student. During law school, I also had the distinct pleasure of obtaining valuable externships. First, I worked as an extern for Judge Abbi Silver on the Nevada Court of Appeals. Then, I worked as an extern with the Appellate Division of the Clark County Public Defender’s office.

In 2017, I began my career as an attorney with the Clark County Public Defender where I represented clients in various judicial proceedings. During my tenure at the Public Defender, I fought vigorously for the constitutional rights of my clients and assisted them with negotiating favorable plea deals.

The first case I prepared for trial involved a client who suffered mental health issues that were exacerbated by the Harvest Festival Shooting. A few days after the shooting and in a state of panic, he walked to a car dealership and drove away in an unattended vehicle. He drove straight to McCarran airport, jumped the fence, and got into the belly of a large plane. He was removed from the plane without incident shortly thereafter, and no federal charges were filed, but the District Attorney decided to charge him with Robbery and Grand Larceny Auto. After a lengthy trial preparation and negotiation process, my co-counsel and I were able to procure a favorable negotiation that facilitated his quick release from custody.

Working at the Public Defender’s office allowed me to work hard and prepare meticulously for my clients. And my resolve to provide my clients with exceptionally vigorous legal counsel grows continuously. But that experience also taught me that the best attorneys listen to what their clients want with an open mind. I will listen to your concerns and continually strive to meet your goals. If you plan to hire an attorney, make sure it’s a person with both the experience and the mindset to achieve the results you deserve.
